The yearly spending at which a card's extra rewards cover its annual fee, set against a card with no fee.

The card you would use otherwise. Enter 0 to compare with no rewards.
Only what you would have bought anyway.
Yearly spending at which the fee is covered
$100,000
$8,333 a month, at 0.50% more back per dollar than the other card
- Fee left after credits
- $500
- Extra back per dollar
- 0.50%
- Ahead or behind at $30,000 a year
- -$350
The reward rates and the value of the credits are your own estimates. Points are worth what you can actually redeem them for, which is often less than the headline figure. Interest is left out: if a balance is carried, the interest is usually far larger than any reward. Sign-up bonuses are left out because they are paid once. An estimate, not financial advice.
Questions
- Why compare with a card that has no fee?
- Because that is the real alternative. A card paying 2% does not earn you 2% for its fee; it earns you the difference between 2% and what a free card would have paid on the same spending.
- How should I value points or miles?
- At what you would really redeem them for, turned into cents per dollar spent. That is your own estimate, and it is usually lower than the figure in an advertisement.
- Does this include interest?
- No. It assumes the balance is paid in full every month. If a balance is carried, the interest is usually much larger than any reward.
