$25 an hour is $52,000 a year. Sometimes
· 6 min read
$25 an hour is $52,000 a year, or $4,333 a month, if you are paid for 40 hours in every one of the 52 weeks. Take two weeks unpaid and it is $50,000. Work 35 hours and it is $45,500. After federal tax, a single filer keeps an estimated $43,962.
The take-home figure is an estimate of federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare only, on the 2026 figures. It leaves out state and local tax. This does not say whether a wage is good or enough, and it is not tax advice.
$25 an hour is how much a year, a month and a week?
| $25 an hour, 40 hours, 52 weeks | Before tax |
|---|---|
| A year | $52,000 |
| A month | $4,333 |
| Every two weeks | $2,000 |
| A week | $1,000 |
That is 2,080 hours: 40 a week for 52 weeks. Jobs are quoted two ways, by the hour and by the year, and they cannot be compared until they are in the same units. The usual answer gives one number and does not say what it assumed. The hourly to salary converter lets you change the hours and the weeks. It is free, there is no account, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
The shortcut: double it and add three zeros
$25 doubled is 50, so $50,000. The shortcut assumes 2,000 hours a year, not 2,080, so it comes out $2,000 low for someone paid every week. It is exactly right for someone who takes two weeks unpaid.
What unpaid time off does to $25 an hour
| Weeks paid | Hours a year | A year |
|---|---|---|
| 52 | 2,080 | $52,000 |
| 50 | 2,000 | $50,000 |
| 48 | 1,920 | $48,000 |
Fifty-two weeks does not mean no time off. It means no unpaid time off. If your holidays are paid, 52 is right. If they are not, take them out: each unpaid week is $1,000 at this rate and these hours.
$25 an hour at 35 or 32 hours a week
| Hours a week | Hours a year | A year |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 2,080 | $52,000 |
| 35 | 1,820 | $45,500 |
| 32 | 1,664 | $41,600 |
At 32 hours a week the same $25 an hour is $10,400 a year less than the answer everyone gives. The rate did not change. The hours did.
$52,000 a year is how much an hour?
$25.00 at 40 hours a week: the same sum backwards. A salary does not come with a fixed number of hours, though, so the answer moves with the hours the job really takes.
| Hours worked a week | $52,000 is, an hour |
|---|---|
| 40 | $25.00 |
| 45 | $22.22 |
| 50 | $20.00 |
A $52,000 salary that runs to 50 hours a week pays $20.00 for each hour worked. That is the only thing the figure says. It is not a claim about what the job is worth.
$25 an hour after taxes
| $52,000, single, 2026 | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | $4,060 |
| Social Security | $3,224 |
| Medicare | $754 |
| Take-home, a year | $43,962 |
| Take-home, a month | $3,663.50 |
| Take-home, every two weeks | $1,690.85 |
Those three come to $8,038, 15.5% of the total. The brackets and limits behind them are the published 2026 IRS and Social Security figures, linked from the take-home calculator. Spread over the 2,080 hours, $25 an hour is an estimated $21.14 an hour in the bank, before any state tax. The take-home pay calculator does this for any salary and for married filers, and $75,000 a year after tax goes through the same sums line by line.
What to do with the number
Put in your rate, then the weeks and hours you are really paid for. When you compare an hourly job with a salaried one, convert the salary back using the hours that job really takes, and compare those. Why the standard year misleads is the subject of the 2,080-hour year is a fiction.
What this does not tell you
- State or local tax. If your state taxes income, you keep less than the estimate here.
- Overtime. Extra hours here are paid at the same rate, and many hourly jobs pay more for them.
- Benefits. Health insurance, a retirement match and paid leave can be worth thousands a year, and neither the hourly nor the yearly figure includes them.
- Your own tax. The estimate is for a single filer with nothing taken out before tax: no 401(k), no health premiums, no credits.
- Whether $25 an hour is a good wage or enough to live on where you are.
