An estimate of federal income tax and FICA only, using the published 2026 figures. It does not include state or local tax, credits, or anything specific to you — if your state taxes income, your real take-home is lower than this. Not tax advice. Questions
- Does this include state tax?
- No. It covers federal income tax and FICA only. State and local tax vary enormously — from nothing at all in several states to over 10% — so a figure here will be too high if your state taxes income.
- Why does a 401(k) contribution not reduce Social Security tax?
- Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before income tax but after FICA. So they lower your income tax bill while Social Security and Medicare are still charged on the full amount.
