The 2,080-hour year is a fiction

Every hourly-to-salary conversion you have ever seen multiplies your rate by 2,080 — forty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year. It is a clean number and almost nobody actually works it.
Where 2,080 comes from, and why it is a convention
It is a payroll convention, not a measurement. It assumes you work every week of the year, including the ones containing public holidays, and that you never take a day off, and that you never work a minute of overtime.
For a salaried employee with paid leave, the convention works fine, because paid time off is paid: the annual total is the same whether you take the holiday or not. For an hourly worker it can be badly wrong in either direction.
The gap runs both ways
- Unpaid time cuts it down. If you take two weeks unpaid, you worked 2,000 hours, not 2,080. If your hours are not guaranteed and a slow month means fewer shifts, the real figure can be far below.
- Overtime pushes it up. Hours beyond forty in a week are typically paid at one-and-a-half. A steady five hours of overtime a week is not 6.5 hours of extra pay — it is 7.5, and it compounds into a number that makes the base rate look misleading.
- Unpaid holidays. There are usually ten or so federal holidays. If you are not paid for them and the business closes, that is eighty hours off the top before you have taken any leave at all.
What to compare instead
When you are weighing an hourly job against a salaried one, the hourly rate is only half the comparison. The salaried offer usually carries paid leave, employer health contributions, and a retirement match, and those have real dollar values that never appear in the rate.
The useful move is to convert in the direction that exposes what you are actually being asked to trade: take the salary, divide by the hours you genuinely expect to work — not 2,080 — and see what the salaried job pays per hour. If the honest number is 2,400 hours, a generous-looking salary can quietly be the worse deal.
