Mileage deduction calculator

Business miles turned into a deduction at the standard rate, with room for a year that has two rates.

Driven before the rate changed.

Driven after the rate changed. Enter 0 if it did not.

Enter the mileage rates to see a result. The fields start empty because these are the government’s figures to publish, not ours, and we have not yet checked them against the source ourselves. They are on IRS — Standard mileage rates.

Standard mileage rates

¢

Cents per business mile, on the IRS page of standard mileage rates.

¢

The same page. If the rate did not change during the year, enter the same figure.

Questions

Why are there two rates?
The IRS sets the rate for a year and occasionally changes it part-way through. When it does, miles are counted at the rate in force on the day they were driven, which is why a log needs dates. If the rate did not change, enter the same figure twice.
Is the deduction the amount of tax I save?
No. A deduction lowers the income that is taxed. What it saves depends on your tax rate, and is a fraction of the deduction.
