Questions

Does "no tax on tips" mean tips are tax-free?
No. It is a deduction from income tax with a yearly maximum. Social Security and Medicare are still charged on every dollar of tips, and tips above the maximum are still taxed as income.
Which part of overtime counts?
Only the premium: the extra you are paid above your usual hourly rate. For time-and-a-half that is the half, which is a third of the overtime pay.
Does this tell me whether I qualify?
No. The deduction applies to certain jobs and tax years and shrinks at higher incomes. The calculator shows the arithmetic for someone who qualifies in full.
