Taxable Social Security calculator
How much of a year's benefits is counted as taxable income, from your other income and the thresholds the IRS publishes.
Pensions, withdrawals, wages and interest, including tax-exempt interest.
Enter the thresholds to see a result. The fields start empty because these are the government’s figures to publish, not ours, and we have not yet checked them against the source ourselves. They are on IRS — Publication 915, Social Security and equivalent railroad retirement benefits.

Questions
- Is this the tax I will pay?
- No. It is the amount of your benefits that is added to your taxable income. The tax on it depends on your bracket and everything else on the return.
- What is combined income?
- Your other income, including tax-exempt interest, plus half of your Social Security benefits. It is the figure the thresholds are measured against.
