What is held back from a year of benefits when you claim early and keep working, at a limit you can check and change.
Wages or self-employment profit. Pensions and investment income do not count.
Enter the earnings limit to see a result. The fields start empty because these are the government’s figures to publish, not ours, and we have not yet checked them against the source ourselves. They are on SSA — Receiving benefits while working.
Published limit

Questions
- Is the money withheld gone?
- No. When you reach full retirement age the benefit is worked out again to give credit for the months that were withheld, so it comes back as a higher benefit later.
- Which earnings count?
- Earnings from work: wages and self-employment profit. Pensions, investment income and withdrawals from savings do not count toward the limit.
